Visas and Immigration

To gain entry clearance you will need to apply for the appropriate visa. We recommend that you apply to your local British Consulate/Embassy as early as possible as the closer to the start date may result in you not gaining a visa. You may be called for an interview in certain cases, and should be prepared to answer questions such as:

  • Why are you going to the UK?
  • What are you studying?
  • Which city are you going to, where in the UK is it located?’
  • How will you support yourself throughout your studies?
  • Who will be funding your studies?
  • What are your plans after you complete your studies?

The visa officer has to be certain that you are entering the UK for the correct reasons, and not to strictly work or other motives. Currently the visa fee for a course less than six months is £63, and for a course greater than six months it is £99. These are multiple entry visas, meaning that holders may return to the UK after a period abroad without requiring a re-entry visa, providing that they return within their original period.

In order to gain entry clearance to the UK, you must be able to prove that:

  • You can meet the cost of your tuition fees and living expenses and those of any accompanying dependents, without working in the UK or claiming public funds;

  • You have been accepted on to a course of study at a recognized and official institution;
  • You intend to follow a full-time course, involving a minimum of fifteen hours organized daytime study per week;
  • You do not intend to work in the UK (except part-time or vacation work, with the consent of the Department for Education and Employment),
  • You intend to leave the UK at the end of your studies.

    To support your application, you will be required to provide:

  • A valid passport
  • Two recent passport-sized photographs; - taken against a light colored background - clear/good quality, not framed or backed - Printed on normal photographic paper - Full face and without sunglasses, hat or other head covering unless you wear this for cultural or religious reasons

  • Entry clearance fee
  • Relevant diplomas or certificates that you hold, that were required in order for you to gain entrance to your programme of study in the UK

  • A letter from the institution that you are to study at, confirming your acceptance on the course, its duration, confirmation that you fulfill the academic requirements of the course and a statement of charges
  • Evidence that you can meet the cost of your course fees and support yourself (and any dependants) financially during your stay in the UK
  • Evidence of government sponsorship if applicable
