Public Transport

Public transport in the UK is reliable and relatively in-expensive way of getting around. Student discounts are also available on some fares and travel cards.

Whichever way you decide to get around during your stay in the UK it is import that you stay safe. Here is some advice on staying safe whilst using public transport:

  1. Try to avoid waiting at bus stops alone especially if traveling in the evening. If you are returning home late and have a long walk home arrange for friends to meet you at the bus stop.

  2. When traveling by Train or the Underground don’t sit in an empty carriage instead pick one that is well lit and occupied by others.

  3. When traveling by train ensure that you store your luggage close to where you are sitting and check your belongings regularly.

  4. Always check the time of the last train, bus or tube to avoid being stranded.

  5. When traveling alone make sure that you tell someone where you are going and what time you are expected back.

Taxis

There will be times during your stay that you will need to use a taxi. It is a good idea to use one when you first arrive in the UK and a taxi is a much safer way to travel home after a night out. As with any means of transport there are guidelines you should follow to ensure your safety.

  1. There will be taxi firms that your university recommends, find out what they are and make of the numbers. Keep these numbers with you at all times so they are handy whenever you may need a taxi.

  2. Only use license taxis, check the back of the taxi for the official license before you get in. Taxis that stop in the street maybe cheaper but they are not all licensed and therefore not as safe.

  3. To avoid overcharging, agree the fare before you get into the taxi.

  4. When talking to the driver do not give out any personal information.

  5. Have your cash ready to pay the driver before you reach your destination.
