Nottingham’s a student city
Nottingham is a major student destination with one in
every ten people being an undergraduate. We are the
fastest-growing city in the country, with the youngest
population.
The city has risen to prominence with its expanding
nightlife and retail quarters and burgeoning arts scene
(we hosted last year's British Art Show and showcased
last year's Turner Prize work before the Tate).
Nottingham is the regional capital for nightlife. No
other city has as many bars and clubs for its size, and
we have more sports facilities per head than anywhere
else in Europe. It's clear that we have an extraordinary
amount to offer students from all over the world. How do
we know? Because Nottingham has the highest graduate
retention rate in the UK.
Students come here for an education, and stay for a
career.

Going out in Nottingham
If you’re looking for a city that’s crammed with stylish
bars, cinemas, music, live comedy venues, student bars,
pubs and nightclubs, then Nottingham’s the place for
you. Our student ambassadors will introduce you to the
popular night-time haunts during your welcome week, but
in the interim, here’s what to expect from the region’s
capital for nightlife.
Live music
Our top music venues, including
Nottingham Arena
and
Rock City,
attract major stars of the rock, pop and indie world. In
fact, Rock City was again nominated for the Kerrang!
Awards Venue of the Year in 2006 and Nottingham Arena
was nominated for the TPI Awards Favorite Venue.
Gatecrasher
took over Media nightclub in 2006 and the building's
grade II listed interior is now an enviable venue having
just undergone a £1.5m transformation.
The Rescue Rooms
and
Stealth
nightclubs also provide live music and are perfect for
those into top DJs and independent artists. Apart from
these there are dozens of other clubs ranging from
Oceana
(cheese) to Junktion 7 (rock/ alternative) to
The Cookie Club
(indie).
Cinemas
If you’re into films then you’ll love The
Broadway,
a dedicated home to independent and world cinema. Just
down the road is
The Screen room,
officially the world’s smallest cinema. For mainstream
movies, there’s also the
Cineworld Cinema
in the Cornerhouse, which offers student discounts and
is situated five minutes walk from the City campus.
The waterfront
The canal-side bars are a popular student haunt during
the long summer evenings with loads of outdoor seating.
Jongleurs Comedy
Club becomes a nightclub once the live comedy
acts have finished and if you’re feeling skint there’s a
Wetherspoons bar (Lloyds) for inexpensive drinks.
Hockley and the Lace Market
Here you’ll find stylish bars and restaurants in
beautifully renovated Lace Market buildings with some
great independent and late night venues.
Tantra, a
late-licensed cocktail lounge, is an ambient venue with
jasmine joss sticks, new age music, beds, live music and
DJs.
The Market Bar
plays funk, hip-hop, electronic and house music, and
Dogma is
a stylish, late night drinking and dancing venue. There
are plenty more bars around this area that you might
like too.
Whatever you’re into, Nottingham will have something for
you.
