Edinburgh
– a culturally diverse, historically significant, socially
alive, environmentally aware, politically central, visually
stimulating experience. In other words you will live and study in
Scotland’s stunning capital – renowned for its cultural festivals,
its rich learning tradition, its magnificent buildings (old and
new), a unique city environment, and a youthful vigorous outlook on
the world.
Edinburgh is a cradle of learning and discovery. Described as a
‘hotbed of genius’ in the 18th Century, the city continues to act as
a base for those at the forefront of financial, scientific,
creative, political and cultural endeavour. While the pursuit of
learning and career progression is assured, you can live life to the
full in some of the UK’s best pubs, clubs, galleries, visitor
attractions and, of course, shops.

|
Festivals
Edinburgh is perhaps best known for its world famous cultural
festivals and events which attract some 1.4 million visitors to the
city each year. Thousands flock to enjoy the Edinburgh International
Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the international
festivals devoted to fılms, books, jazz and blues, politics and
science and, of course, the unique ‘Hogmanay’ celebrations
Literature
Edinburgh’s literary tradition is assured to this day through
writing talent such as JK Rowling, Ian Rankin, Irvine Welsh – one of
Heriot-Watt’s very own graduates – and Alexander McCall-Smith. This
is why Edinburgh is the world’s first City of Literature.
Science and innovation
Science and discovery also continues to play a huge part in defining
the city. The inventor of the telephone was born in Edinburgh, while
more recently, one of the city’s many bio-industry companies was the
first in the world to clone a mammal – the elegantly named Dolly the
Sheep.
Creative Endeavour makes the city tick. Some of the world’s top
selling video game titles were developed in Edinburgh including
Grand Theft Auto by Rockstar Games. Work from some of the UK’s
leading architects and interior designers can be seen throughout the
city and a new animation studio has just been established here.
Nightlife
By day, Edinburgh is a smart and sophisticated centre of culture and
commerce. But it is at night that the city really comes alive with
its vast array of pubs, bars and clubs.
Sport
Edinburgh is also a city for sport – two top Scottish Premier League
football teams, athletics at Meadowbank Stadium, swimming at the
Commonwealth Pool, world-class rugby at Murrayfield, skiing and
snowboarding at Hillend, climbing at Ratho Adventure Centre and an
array of top golf clubs are just some of the great attractions for
all you sport addicts out there.
Green spaces
To top it all, Edinburgh is lucky to have significant and
magnificent green spaces – the impressive extinct volcano Arthur’s
Seat and its associated park lie at the heart of the city. If that
wasn’t enough, you are within easy striking distance of some of the
world’s most beautiful wild landscapes, from the Trossachs to the
West and the Highlands to the North, to the Borders to the South.
Scotland is a small and friendly northern European country of
around 5 million people. We are part of the United Kingdom, but we
have our own devolved parliament based in the capital, Edinburgh,
and our own very distinctive culture.
So what makes Scotland so different? There are some things that are
uniquely Scottish but in truth, there's no single element that
defines the country. Rather, it's a subtle blend of many different
ingredients that have been added to the mix down through the
centuries. From majestic glens and tranquil lochs to exciting
concerts and pulsing city night-life, Scotland offers an unrivalled
range of things to see and do. There are exceptional leisure
facilities, including some of the world’s greatest golf courses,
stunning mountain walks and thrilling water sports centres.
Scotland's often turbulent past, extraordinary people, rich
diversity of arts and culture, and the many other features found
around the country have produced a nation that treasures its past
and keenly anticipates its future. As well as being a popular
destination for students, Scotland is a fantastic place to live and
work. Scotland offers leading companies from around the world a
high-quality business location, together with an exceptional quality
of life. Scotland's traditions, history and culture are known around
the world, and are studied at many leading universities in Europe,
North America and Australasia. The country boasts international
airports at Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Prestwick in Ayrshire,
as well as several regional airports. There are also good rail and
road links across the country, and an exceptional range of
accommodation and visitor attractions.
Campus is the Latin word for a field or open space and at Heriot-Watt
you will enjoy an open, accessible and spacious environment that is
just perfect for pursuing your chosen field of study.

Heriot-Watt University is the eighth oldest higher education
institution in the UK.

The name
Heriot-Watt commemorates George Heriot – the 16th
century financier to King James, and James Watt – the
great 18th century inventor and engineer. The University
originated as the School of Arts of Edinburgh, founded
in 1821 as the world’s first Mechanics Institute, which
revolutionised access to education. An early pioneer of
equal opportunities, women were welcomed as early as
1869 – 20 years ahead of other institutions – and in
1966 Heriot-Watt became a University by Royal Charter.
The Scottish College of Textiles in Galashiels merged
with Heriot-Watt in 1998 and created the University's
School of Textiles and Design.
The Watt Club, the University's Alumni
Association, recently celebrated its 150th Anniversary,
making The Watt Club the oldest graduate association in
the UK.
Often referred to as Scotland’s international
University, Heriot-Watt has two major student campuses
in Scotland, a campus in Dubai and over 50
international academic learning partners.
A further small campus in Orkney, in the North
Coast of Scotland, is home to Heriot-Watt’s
International Centre for Island Technology.
